UNILAG students shut down campus after 300L student is electrocuted to death(Photos)

According to reports reaching Naij.com, the students have shut the institution’s main gate, as they asked the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahman Bello, to intervene in the matter. Some of the students, who spoke with our correspondent, noted that since the electrocution took place within the school premises, the school management should take responsibility for the incident, which has left the family of the student in tears.

The late student, Oluchi Anekwe, who was reportedly electrocuted on her way to her room in Sodeinde Residence, New Hall, was said to have been rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), but was pronounced dead on arrival. During the protest, the students chanted “No VC, No going back” as they demanded Professor Bello’s presence among them.
The students also took to twitter to express their anger over the unfortunate incident, noting that many are still unaware of the naked wires which are laying recklessly on the way to their hostels.

It read: GREATEST AKOKITES!!! The University of Lagos Students’ Union regrets to announce the passing away of one of us, our very own OLUCHI ANEKWE, a 300 level student of the department of Accounting. Oluchi, till her death, was a first class student, and a very active student in class. Our condolence goes to her families, relatives and friends. We pray that God will grant them the fortitude to bear the loss. The event that led to her death is in its entirety avoidable. We hereby call on all concerned authorities to swing into action so as to prevent future occurrence.

Signed; Comrade Abiodun Martins ULSU President (2014/2015) As at the time of filing this report, the students were still expressing their displeasure over the mishap, as reports from the institution’s Akoka, Yaba campus state that there are no vehicles coming in or going out of the school.
